Our school-based programs are thoughtfully designed to support children facing reading and social challenges. By incorporating therapy dogs into tailored activities, we create a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment that promotes learning, emotional connection, and confidence-building.
 

Programs Offered:

• Individual Reading Sessions: One-on-one reading with a child, therapy dog, trained handler, and teacher.

• Group Reading Sessions: In small group settings (up to eight children), children read to a therapy dog, supported by a handler and teacher.

• Interactive Activities: Offered individually or in groups, these sessions include role-play, social-emotional learning, and activities centred around understanding dogs and enhancing self-worth.
   

Our Commitment to Inclusion

We proudly support children of all abilities, including those with hearing or visual impairments, severe intellectual disabilities, emotional challenges, and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. While our program serves children of all ages, it is especially impactful for children between the ages of 4 and 9.

Therapy Dogs in the Classroom:

Our school therapy dogs and handlers are specifically trained to operate in educational settings. The dogs are calm, non-reactive to sudden movements or loud sounds, and are trained not to jump on students. For health and hygiene, all dogs are bathed the evening before a school visit. Dogs are always on a lead unless in a secure, enclosed space—and only with prior permission.
 

About Our Handlers:

Handlers are dedicated Nepean Therapy Dog volunteers who care for and guide the dogs during sessions. Each handler receives specialised training to work effectively with both students and staff and to ensure the well-being of the therapy dog. All handlers hold a current Working with Children Check.
 

Insurance:

Nepean Therapy Dogs is fully covered by public liability insurance.
