Our range school programs are designed to address reading and social challenges in children. Our approaches include:
-
One on one reading: with child, dog, handlers and teacher
-
Group reading: Up to eight children in a group reading to a dog, handler and teacher
-
One on one or group activities with dogs, handlers and teacher. This includes role-play, learning about dogs or connecting to self-worth.
Yes we are inclusive
We also work with children who have hearing and visual impairments, who have to severe intellectual disabilities and who are emotionally impaired and economically disadvantaged. The Nepean Therapy Dogs school program works with children of all ages but is very effective in children ages 4 to 9 years old.
Common concerns about classrooms and therapy dogs
About the school therapy dog: Our school therapy dogs and handlers are trained to work in schools. Therapy dogs are trained not to react to the environment; they don’t jump on people or respond to abrupt noises. To exceed hygiene standards our dogs are bathed the night before classroom visitation. All dogs are on leads unless in a secure place and only with your permission.
About the handler: The handler is the Nepean Therapy Dog volunteer who handles and cares for the dog during the visit. Handlers are specially trained by Nepean Therapy Dogs to work with children, staff and identify the needs of the dog. Handlers have a current Working with Children’s Check.
Insurance: Yes, Nepean Therapy Dogs has a public liability insurance.
